-->The Ho Co Student Film Festival, now in its fourth-year, is a student conceived and executed organization, developed through the HCPSS Gifted and Talented Program. The festival aims to expose and promote high school talent in film production. A juried competition, centered on the idea of giving student submitters concrete feedback and suggestions to ensure their rapid development as filmmakers. It is open to all Howard County private and public high school students. Based out of River Hill High School, the festival is an intra-county effort, with active executive committee members from 5 area high schools including a private school.
This year the festival received 27 film submissions from students around the county, a 33% increase from just last year.~ Creating a film takes a student approximately 12 hours per minute therefore the typical 10 minute film often requires over 120 hours to create. Schools represented include Centennial, Atholton, Wilde Lake, Howard, Mount Hebron, Marriotts Ridge, Reservoir, Glenelg, Glenelg Country, Oakland Mills, and River Hill high schools. This year's preliminary judges hailed from 7 area high schools, including Glenelg Country School. In short, 10/12 of the area public schools were represented and 1/2 of the HoCo private schools were represented in terms of submissions. Final round judges are from the local professional film community. Pixel Workshop, American Film Institute, Maryland Film Society has all been on the final judging panel.
